In a recent grad course, I was asked to make a speculative project in any format of my choosing that attempts to imagine a new trajectory for my practice. What resulted was a piece that takes a line of flight from my past and current frustrations both with criticism and academic writing and the limitations (or blind spots) that these forms entail. This line of flight also pursues my interest in the indivisibility of cinema and its transient, intangible nature as a site (composed) of encounters. Though it wasn’t planned from the outset, what I ended up finding was a realm of possibility contained in the desktop interface—which is, after all, my gateway to cinema, my means of exploring it, and a platform of meaning-making and creativity. Contained in the video are scattered thoughts and sketched formal ideas, still gestating, existing somewhere between searching and finding.
From here, new directions may follow.
